Abortion in Islam

The approach from Islam concerning abortion and contraception has generally been one that considers the common good of the community. Muslims see themselves as vice regents of God, called to do God’s work in this world. Islam’s ethical practices are flexible and are often adapted to political and social climates. For Muslims abortion can be “carried out to protect the mother’s health or life or to prevent the birth of a seriously handicapped child”
